How To Make Surrender Real
In this very helpful sermon, Pastor Minchin gave suggestions for really surrendering, in giving God each part of our bodies. This sermon was almost always given wherever he was holding meetings.
"We were very pleased to have Brother Len Minchin, the Young People's Secretary of the South N.S.W. Conference, with us for a few days. When speaking to us in the Friday evening meeting, he introduced his subject as "something very simple, but very vital." The thought was emphasised that it is impossible to have close communion with Jesus, as friend with friend, if we do not empty our hearts of all the rubbish that would prevent His coming in. The latch of our heart's door is on ourselves. Christ will not force His way in, but patiently stands and knocks."—AAR, October 2, 1933

Australasian Years 1932-1946
Is A Life of Victory Over Sin Possible? by E. L. Minchin (AAR). *
Key, early articles in the Australasian Union Conference Record (AAR)
These key articles appeared in 1936 and ushered in a new period of great spirituality in his writing. The first two later appeared as a series in the Youth's Instructor without the third, so the third is not truly part of the series, but it follows the first two in many ways.

"The Youth Congress just held at Avondale was a never-to-be-forgotten experience. The inspiration of this gathering will, we believe, be felt throughout the Australasian field. In what more appropriate place could such a meeting be held? The attendance exceeded our most sanguine hopes, there being more than three hundred and fifty young people during the week, and an influx of nearly six hundred on the Sabbath. ... Scores of young people bore witness to the change that has come into their lives since the memorable revival experience of last winter."

Farewell article penned by Pastor Minchin. A brief excerpt:
"Especially to our young people, among whom we have laboured for so long, do we send this message of loving farewell. May God keep you faithful to Him and to the supreme purpose He has for the youth of this church. In this wonderful yet solemn hour, when the cause of God so urgently needs the zeal and strength of consecrated youth, I appeal to you to throw yourselves without reserve into the finishing of God's work in the earth."

"It seemed to me that the Spirit of God prevailed strongly throughout the series of meetings. It was my privilege to attend every meeting and four chapel exercises besides. I must confess, until Elder Minchin revealed the secrets of prayer life to us, I never really knew how to pray. And I strongly suspect that many others were in the same predicament. If all others who attended the services received the same kind of blessing in their hearts as I did, I am sure that the meetings can be written up as a great success."

November 6, 1956, Christ the Answer to My Need - Week of Prayer at Union College, (CUR)
This was an announcement of the upcoming week of prayer.
"Christ, the answer to my need" is the theme chosen by Elder Minchin for this special week of devotion. Elder Minchin states that he wants to give a true spiritual feeling to these meetings, to awaken in all the need for more spiritual study and living, and then to give a practical method of attaining this way of life. Spiritual music will be one of the features of the prayer week, with "Christ, the answer to my need" as the theme song."
July 2, 1957, Greater Washington Youth Revival, by Don Yost, (YI). **
"As Pastor Minchin rises to speak, his smile and sincerity make us settle back in our seats for a friendly, heart-to-heart chat. There are no visual aids. The appeal is to both mind and heart, so that when the meeting is over, we have definite instructions to follow as well as a satisfied feeling in our heart. He draws from Scripture, from the Spirit of prophecy, and from personal experience to show the folly of sinfulness and the satisfaction of wholesome Christian living. Almost before we know it, the time has come for the meeting to close. An opportunity is given for young people to stay for a season of prayer. This is not so much an appeal to sinners and backsliders as an appeal for youth to come and pray for one another. We stay. We think perhaps there will be seventy-five or a hundred, but soon nearly every seat in the front sections is filled. Five hundred form a giant prayer circle. All want victory for themselves and for their friends."—Don Yost, "Greater Washington Youth Revival," The Youth's Instructor, July 2, 1957.
This is a wonderful article regarding the way the Lord blessed revival efforts close to the church's headquarters.

October 17, 1957, Where is the Flock, by E.L. Minchin, (RH)
October 29, 1957, Simplicity, by E.L. Minchin, (YI).
This is an important article on the need for simplicity in our efforts if we want God's blessings.
"The youth may be a power for Christ, if they will maintain their simplicity, and not seek to present something startling, something original, but teach the precepts of their Lord. But to invest the simplest truths with novelty and singularity, is to rob them of their power to win souls to Christ. . . . What you need is a living experience in the things of God, and simplicity in presenting the love of Christ to the lost. . . . When the heart is aglow with the love of Jesus, you will express it to others, and become witnesses for Christ."—Ellen G. White, The Youth's Instructor, May 4, 1893 .
November 21, 1957, Milking Cows and Faithfulness, by E.L. Minchin, (YI).
"Soon our Lord, the "Manager" of the universe, is coming back again. He has left us each a work to do. All that He requires is that we be faithful. He will not ask us whether we were conference presidents, church elders, or MV secretaries. Position, education, or wealth will not count in that day. Instead, He will look to see how much of His Spirit we possess, and He will see the faithfulness with which we have loved and served Him even in the smallest and humblest of duties."
"It is not the length of time we labor but our willingness and fidelity in the work that makes it acceptable to God. In all our service a full surrender of self is demanded. The smallest duty done in sincerity and self-forgetfulness is more pleasing to God than the greatest work when marred with self-seeking. . . . He regards more the love and faithfulness with which we work than the amount we do."—Ellen G. White, Christ's Object Lessons, p. 402.—ELM, "Milking Cows and Faithfulness, The Youth's Instructor, November 21, 1957.

March 3, 1959, Revival and the Responsibility of the Ministry, by E.L. Minchin, (MIN). ***
"When God finds truly humble and dedicated instruments who are willing to pay the price that a truly spiritual ministry demands, He has mighty weapons in His hand for the breaking down of strongholds and the establishing of His kingdom in the hearts of men. The greatest preparation for any revival must take place in the hearts of the instruments God will use. It is the preacher's inner life that matters most, and largely determines the success or failure of any revival. It is not his education, his culture, or his organizing ability, important as they may be. If he is a born-again servant of God, and has a passionate love for Christ; if he has a tender and understanding heart in his dealing with souls, and a growing love for and familiarity with the Word of God; if he is an unworldly man whom the people know comes to his task from the higher levels of fellowship and communion with God, a vitalizing power will attend his ministry. If he does not have this, his ministry becomes mediocre and ineffective."

August 30, 1960, Driven by the Spirit of God, report by E.L. Minchin,

Minchin here reports meetings that took place in Germany.
"My purpose in going to Europe had been to offer Christ Jesus, the sinner's Friend, to our youth and to join them in seeking for a deeper, truer consecration, for more power to live victoriously, for more strength to love and serve Him. The response was overwhelming. Never-to-be-forgotten scenes were witnessed. Unprecedented crowds of youth, Adventist and non-Adventist, packed the churches and auditoriums to overflowing. Like an avalanche, the Spirit of God swept away indifference, sin, prejudice, and unbelief."
October 13, 1960, God's Call to Adventist Youth, by E.L. Minchin, (RH).
"Many a youth who has toiled all night and caught nothing, whose life seems futile and unproductive, might well hear this voice by his own life's tempestuous and uncertain Galilee. Christ must be the Master of your service as He was of Peter's. He must be in complete control of your future plans. If you will launch out into the deep and obey the voice of Christ, do His bidding despite previous failure, your nets will break and a fullness and a happiness that you have never known will flood your life. Christ must come first in the life of every true Christian. He must come before youth's loved ones. He must come before your girlfriend, or your boyfriend."
November 22, 1960, Festival of the Holy Spirit, Atlantic City, (YI)
Hordes of young people came from far distant places by various modes of transportation, many by railroad. The Sante Fe railroad put together one of the longest special trains in its history—21 cars for 750 passengers. That necessitated bringing along 15,000 boxed lunches for the trip. The group stopped in Battle Creek on the way, where Elder Minchin spoke to them on the "Faith of our Fathers."
November 22, 1960, Steps to Knowing God's Will, attributed to E. L. Minchin, (YI).
This excerpt comes from an article written by Loren Dickenson, sharing information gleaned from a question-and-answer discussion group focusing on "Spiritual Problems." Pastor Minchin was one of many pastors giving insights to the young people attending. The ten steps were originally penned by E. E. Shelhamer in his book Heart Talks To Converts. The Q&A took place at the North American Youth convocation held in Atlantic City, NJ.

Helderberg Week of Prayer
South African Union Congress / Helderberg Week of Prayer
January 15, 1961, Helderberg's Week of Prayer, report by E. W. Marter (SADO).
This article shares many helpful details about the conference.
"From the beginning to the end of the week of prayer, Elder E. L. Minchin made one single, direct appeal: "Come nearer to God. Give Him first place in your life. You cannot live independently. If you do not keep yourself under the direct control of God, you will inevitably come under the power of Satan's temptations to ambition, indulgence, or display, and be enslaved by the enemy. There is real freedom for you. It is found only in daily choosing to walk with Jesus, and in constantly relying upon Him."
"What has been the underlying secret of these blessed experiences? God does nothing except in answer to earnest prayer. Not only have the regular prayer bands been attended more than usual this year, but the hidden spring of blessing and power from which these results have flowed is to be found in the voluntary prayer groups in the dormitories."
January 15, 1961, Helderberg's Week of Prayer, by E. L. Minchin (SADO).
"One of my never-to-be-forgotten memories is the memorable week I had the joy of spending with our students and faculty members at beautiful Helderberg College. Letters continue to come to my desk from young people who found Christ at that time. It was one of the greatest spiritual weeks of my ministry among our young people. Shall we ever forget that four-hour praise and testimony service, or the late-night prayer season in the boy's dormitory, when so many victories were claimed for Christ. I know that the enemy of souls has been fiercely con- tending the victories won at that time. Fight the good fight of faith, my young friends. Daily renew your vows of consecration and let Jesus Christ have His way with you, and you will certainly win the victory at last."
January 15, 1961, "Africa's Greatest Investiture," Pastor Minchin's Message To Our Youth, South African Division Outlook, by E.L. Minchin, (SADO).
"THREE hundred and twenty-six young people invested! This remarkable service took place at Lower Gwelo Mission Station on October 7 while Elders Minchin and Osmunson were visiting our field. When Elder Minchin requested those to stand who were to be invested, almost the entire audience stood. Believing they had misunderstood his meaning, he had them be seated and repeated his request, and again three hundred and twenty-six stood to their feet. This is the largest investiture in the Southern Rhodesia Field, and very possibly in the Southern African Division."
March 31, 1961, Update on Australian Evangelist in South Africa, (AAR).
This only makes a slight mention of Pastor Minchin: "As a climax to our year's public work in the city we were glad to feature the visit of Pastor Len Minchin from the General Conference. He ran nine meetings for us over the final weekend between Thursday and Sunday evenings. Some of the meetings ran for four hours, but none complained! Great victories were gained, and many halting between two opinions were brought to decision by his strong appeals and simple, sincere approach. It was a refreshing experience to have him in our home and to associate with him in ministry. I believe he enjoyed it, too."

April 30, 1962, Portland Youth Congress, Great Revival Preaching (YI).
"Not only did these 14,000 persons in attendance set a new record at the coliseum but a new world's record of 1,254 Master Guides invested presented a beautiful and thrilling sight on Sabbath afternoon. The congress was a great success in many respects but most of all we praise God for the rich outpouring of His Spirit upon the con- gregation. Over 1,500 young people came forward on Friday night in surrender as Elder E. L. Minchin made an altar call, and hundreds of youth dedicated themselves to service in the Lord's work on Sabbath evening at the close of the congress."
January 14, 1963 Minchin Family Members Ordained, AAR
"Three sons-in-law becoming ordained to the gospel ministry in 1962 was an unusual and special joy that came to Pastor and Mrs. E. L Minchin. The family directory now shows the members widely scattered in the service of the Lord. Joan and her husband, Pastor Ron Neall, are stationed in Pennsylvania, caring for three churches. Yvonne and her husband, Dr. W. Dysinger, are in Tanganyika for a period. The doctor is training the natives in the principles of public health and preventive medicine, while Yvonne instructs the women similarly. Leona's husband, Pastor Norman Gulley, is now a Bible teacher at Japan Missionary College, while Valmae's husband, Pastor Peter Read, chose to accept a call back to the north of England, where he is engaged in evangelism."
April 22, 1963, Capacity Crowds At Melbourne Revival, (AAR).
"The young people of Melbourne were awaiting such a visitation of the Holy Spirit when Pastor Minchin came into their midst. For many months a devoted group had pleaded with God for the outpouring of the Spirit through His servant. Wayward youth had been visited and prayer had been offered with and for them. No wonder that when our pastor preached the Word, warm from his own heart of love for God and youth, Melbourne's young people responded with equal warmth and dedication."
July 1, 1963, A Fragrance of Christ, by E.L. Minchin, (AAR).
"The object of the Christian life is fruitbearing—the reproduction of Christ's character in the believer, that it may be reproduced in others. . . . As you receive the Spirit of Christ—the spirit of unselfish love and labour for others—you will grow and bring forth fruit. The graces of the spirit will ripen in your character. . . . Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own. . . . Were all who profess His name bearing fruit to His glory, how quickly the whole world would be sown with the seed of the gospel. Quickly the last great harvest would be ripened, and Christ would come to gather the precious grain."—Christ's Object Lessons, pages 67-69.

"Taking his message from John 15, Pastor Minchin listed the progress: No fruit, fruit, more fruit, much fruit. There are 8,810 promises in the Bible, he said. Of these 7,641 are direct promises from God to man. When we fulfil the conditions, God will fulfil the promises. The trouble is not with the message, pointed out Pastor Minchin, but with the messenger. Many are satisfied with more fruit when they might have much fruit. A spirit of unselfish love and labour for others will cause one to grow and bring forth
fruit, concluded Pastor Minchin."

February 1, 1971 Report: Revival Fires on the Campus, by M. Stevenson (MIN).
This article by Pastor Mike Stevenson describes the revival work that occurred at Andrews University in the 1970s. I was there and personally witnessed the overnight transformation of the university. I remember testimony services at Pioneer Memorial Church that went on for hours. I remember hymns being sung in the cafeteria line. It was an amazing transformation. One of the ring leaders of trouble on campus who came to Jesus at that time later lived with my family, and I saw the transformation up close. Mike was led into the ministry by Pastor Minchin's preaching.
